Chivalry

The other day I was walking up the stairs at school. I made my way past a fifth grade class, saying hello to the teacher- a male veteran teacher that was just hired at our school this year. Our building is full of windows (great for natural light, bad for heating and cooling) and as I continued walking I observed the coolest thing I've seen in a long time....he stopped at the top of the stairs and held the door open. All of his kids also stopped, except for the girls. The girls, no matter their place in line, continued past their male classmates- through the door that was held for them and into the classroom. Before all the boys. Once all the girls had passed, then the boys proceeded up the stairs, followed, finally, by the teacher.

I couldn't believe my eyes, and doubled back to ask the teacher if he did, in fact, let all the girls go ahead of the boys into the class. He replied with an, "of course I did, ladies first.....isn't that what everyone does?"
Chivalry is not dead. At least not at my school.

I had a friend once who would get insulted if men held the door open for her. I never understood that. I'm glad those boys are learning good manner; and I hope the girls said Thank You.

So refreshing to hear! My husband still opens the door for me and I plan on teaching my son the same; my cooperating teacher lets her girls line up for lunch first every day except fridays when the boys get to! I love reading your blog and I just started my own. I would love to have you as a follower if you would like to! :)
